TITLE: Back to the Tea Party
ARTIST: Dylan Anderson A young kid suddenly finds themselves transported to an enchanted place full of harrowing adventures and unusual characters.
Why is a Hatter like a Scientist? I haven't the slightest idea. Perhaps with enough time, the answer will come around. This multi-layer wood art is constructed from various pieces of laser-cut plywoods. Each stained with custom hand mixed stains and colors. Approximate size of art is 11" x 17". Frame measures 17 1/4" x 23 1/4". About the Artist: Dylan is a creator based in Ann Arbor, MI. His work primarily involves a mix of laser cutting and engraving and more traditional woodworking/handcrafting techniques. Since starting Chromatoform in 2016, he has strived to push the limits of what laser cutting can achieve. |
TITLE: Morganic Tea
ARTIST Morgan Barber Utilizing tea and acrylic paint, 'Morganic Tea' takes concepts from Alice in Wonderland to an abstract dimension.
I look at art as more than paint on a canvas. Art is a process, not a product. Every piece of mine holds a unique process and experience. I hope you find something, whether it's meaningful or a simple feeling of joy. The following is the definition of the word "Morganic": Making new connections through abstract art by allowing your mind to wonder while your hands go along for the ride. Allowing the process to happen without judgement. Being present with each turn, stroke, color and mixture. To acknowledge that there is more than one way to understand and think about what has been made onto the surface you see before you. |
TITLE : The Real Housewives of Wonderland
ARTIST : Samantha Cover What is it like to be a woman in 2022? We may love our lives, our homes, our families and our professions, but everyone desires an occasional escape from reality. Stuck at home, unable to really socialize, we have spent the last couple of years worrying about our health, our families (both immediate and extended), our health, our financial situations, maybe we deal with marital strife or struggle with infertility, maybe we had a falling out with a relative or friend. We sat there for over two years watching the news reports, from the first cases of covid to the rising death toll, shut-downs, masks, loneliness, limited travel opportunities. Some of us collected unemployment for the first time in our lives. Some of us lost loved ones. Some of us found ourselves.
What is Wonderland to you? Is is taking control and orchestrating something big? Is it letting go and living in the moment? Is it the ability to drop everything and have a tea party or a drink with friends? Is it dressing up…..or dressing down? Is it sitting back and laughing at the absurdity of the world we live in? Wonderland is something different for everyone. Find your Wonderland and visit as often as you need to……you deserve it. After all, we are all mad here. Samantha Cover is a professional photographer based in Washtenaw County. She has been photographing weddings, engagements, boudoir and other portraits for 20 years. Together with her husband, Brian, they are the photographers behind A Thousand Words Photography (www.atwphotography.com). Their work has been published in many magazines and blogs. Thanks to their stellar reputation, they are considered one of the top wedding studios in Michigan and are referred by many of the area’s top venues. Their weddings do not stop at the Michigan border; they have been commissioned to photograph weddings in Florida, Ohio, Boston, NYC, Chicago, Pennsylvania, Canada and Mexico. |

TITLE: Cheers to the Mad
ARTIST: Monica Spencer My version of Wonderland consists of the women who’ve been described as, completely off their head, but have helped pave the way for a more equitable world. My Mad Tea Party guests of honor include:
Junko Tabei (Upper Right) 22 September 1939 – 20 October 2016 Japanese mountaineer, Junko Tabei was the first woman to reach the summit of Mount Everest and the first woman to ascend the Seven Summits, climbing the highest peak on every continent. Tabei was also a teacher and author. She wrote seven books, organized environmental projects to clean up rubbish left behind by climbers on Everest, and led annual climbs up Mount Fuji for youth affected by the Great East Japan Earthquake. Angela Yvonne Davis (Middle Right) Born January 26, 1944 Davis is an American political activist, philosopher, academic, scholar, and author. A feminist and a Marxist, Davis was a longtime member of the Communist Party USA (CPUSA) and a founding member of the Committees of Correspondence for Democracy and Socialism (CCDS). She is the author of more than ten books on class, gender, race, and the US prison system. Magdalena Carmen Frida Kahlo y Calderón (Bottom Right) 6 July 1907 – 13 July 1954 Kahlo was a Mexican painter who explored questions of identity, postcolonialism, gender, class, and race in Mexican society through her many brilliantly colored portraits and self-portraits. Kahlo is remembered for being a woman who broke all social conventions. Her defiance against needing to fit in is nothing less than admirable, both back then and even now. Amelia Mary Earhart (Upper Left) Born July 24, 1897; disappeared July 2, 1937; declared dead January 5, 1939) An American aviation pioneer and writer, Earhart was the first female aviator to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean. She set many other records, was one of the first aviators to promote commercial air travel, wrote best-selling books about her flying experiences, and was instrumental in the formation of The Ninety-Nines, an organization for female pilots. Malala Yousafzai (Middle Left) Born 12 July 1997 Yousafzai is a Pakistani female education activist and the 2014 Nobel Peace Prize laureate. Awarded when she was 17, she is the world's youngest Nobel Prize laureate, and the second Pakistani and the first Pashtun to ever receive a Nobel Prize. She is known for human rights advocacy, especially the education of women and children in her native Swat, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, where the Pakistani Taliban have at times banned girls from attending school. Her advocacy has grown into an international movement, and according to former Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, she has become Pakistan's "most prominent citizen”. Joan Ruth Bader Ginsburg (Bottom Left) March 15, 1933 – September 18, 2020 Ginsburg was an American lawyer and jurist who served as an associate justice of the Supreme Court of the United States from 1993 until her death in 2020. She was the first Jewish woman and the second woman to serve on the Court, after Sandra Day O'Connor. Ginsburg spent much of her legal career as an advocate for gender equality and women's rights, winning many arguments before the Supreme Court. Cheers to these women and the many others who continue to pave the way for future generations! Stay mad! |
